Top 4 July 4th Events in the Midlands

By Jeanette Dempsey, Editor/Publisher July 3, 2018

This is one of my favorite times of year! Lovely weather (HOT!), great places to visit with your family and the opportunity to celebrate Independence Day. I am originally from Hope Mills, NC so I usually go home for the July 4th celebration with my family. We get together, have great food, great conversation and great fun watching the fireworks at the end of the day.

This year I am looking forward to going to some of the festivities here in the Capital City. I am very excited about attending the Lexington Peach Festival for the first time since moving to Columbia 10 years ago. I can't be in more than one place at a time, but I do plan to make a schedule so that I can attend as many events with my family as possible.

SALUTE FROM THE SHORE 2018

July 4, 2018, 1:45 pm | Spence Island on Lake Murray

For the last nine years on the 4th of July, hundreds of thousands of people have gathered on the beaches of South Carolina in patriotic attire to wave the red, white and blue and to demonstrate their gratitude to America’s finest for their bravery and commitment to protecting our freedom.

This year, Salute from the Shore is proud to announce that the annual tribute will be highlighted with a flyover of F-16s from the 169th Fighter Wing at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. And for the first time ever, we are excited to announce that in addition to flying the entire South Carolina coast, the F-16s will also perform a Salute from the shores of Lake Murray! If South Carolinians are unable to make it to the beaches, they will still have an opportunity to participate in the Salute in the Midlands area.

The jets will fly over Spences Island on Lake Murray about 1:45 on July 4th. Participants at Lake Murray are strongly urged to organize patriotic displays in groups, big and small, and to share their tributes online for our armed forces around the world to see.

Salute from the Shore urges visitors to “Salute” by wearing and waving red, white and blue during the flyover.
