7 Gardening Activities for Kids in Columbia, SC

Kids in the Midlands love gardening!

By Jeanette Dempsey, Publisher June 24, 2016
Summer is the perfect time to teach your kids how to make their world more beautiful by gardening. My daughters and I LOVE crafting and gardening. We painted a small park bench that my youngest daughter had when she was a toddler and made it look so nice. We later sold it to a nice lady on Fort Jackson for her son. We felt so good painting it and giving it a totally new look.

If you are looking for activities to keep your kids busy this summer, try the 7 gardening activities listed below as a way to keep them from saying "Mom, I'm bored!".

1. Pick up some cool kids gardening tools: kids love to have their own tools to use when gardening, why not pick up kid-friendly gardening tools to motivate them while gardening.

2. Get down and dirty: most kids love getting down on the ground and getting their hands dirty by planting flowers or looking for bugs.

3. Make your own compost: find a container with a lid that can be placed in your backyard, garage or another appropriate location and add kitchen waste, plant waste, soil and other biodegradable items. This will motivate your child to keep composting.

4. Collect seeds: annuals are great for the garden. They don't return every year, but if you want to grow your own vegetables or fruits this is the way to go. You can get seeds a pack of seeds at Dollar Tree 4 for $1. You can't beat that.

5. Plant perennials:
plant flowers that come back year after year (bulbs, roses, hydrangeas, mums or other perennials). The beauty of perennials is they are so easy to take care of and come back every year to make your yard look amazing. I really love them!

6. Scavenger hunt for bugs: kids love a good scavenger hunt. Why not introduce them to bugs that are good for your garden. Introducing positive insects (beetles, lapwings, damsel bugs or other positive insects)
to your garden is a great way to teach your kids the importance of balancing an ecosystem.

7. Decorate containers or rocks: make your garden even prettier by adding decorative containers (plastic or terra cotta) or painted rocks that identifies each plant. Your kids will love decorating them!
