Martin Luther King, Jr. - Local Day of Service Opportunities

Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most influential leaders of all time. His impact on segregation has improved the lives of millions of people regardless of race. Growing up, I had no concept of what segregation was because by the time I was old enough to know who Martin Luther King Jr was, segregation had been abolished.

  • Born Michael Luther King Jr. - January 15, 1929
  • Changed his name to Martin
  • Graduated from High School at the age of 15
  • Morehouse Graduate with B.A. in 1948
  • B.D in 1951
  • Completed his residence in Doctorate in 1953
  • Received his Doctorate in 1955

Opportunities to Volunteer on the MLK Day of Service:
  • MLK Day of Service- Carnival
    City Year is hosting a MLK Day Carnival in collaboration with one of our school partners. We will have booths with face painting, peace poems, dance contest, and more. There will also be 3 beautification projects around the school. The projects include constructing a peace mural, revamping of nature.
  • MLK Day of Service
    For MLK Day of Service, the Palmetto Conservation Corps will be working with Dutch Fork Elementary School. The Corps will engage their PTA and any other volunteers that want to participate in developing DFESâ outdoor learning spaces for student use. 
  • PB&J Competition                                                                                                   There are several service activities planned to give volunteers a variety of choices that all have the same goal - serve together in an inclusive environment to provide food assistance to those experiencing hunger in our community. Canned goods will be collected by the Best Buddies organization
  • UWASC Staff MLK Day of Service with SBP
    Volunteers will have the opportunity to make improvements on a home affected by the historic flooding of 2015. We will work with our partner agency, SBP, which specializes in reducing time between disaster and normalcy for affected individuals.
  • MLK Day of Service at Harvest Hope Food Bank
    Volunteers with be providing services to Harvest Hope Food Bank by providing assistance on the floor with food packaging.
  • MLK Day of Service with Palmetto Conservation Foundation
    Trail building and maintenance
  • Elders Need Helpers in the Columbia Community: Volunteer to Help Seniors Today!
    We are a nonprofit organization looking for volunteers willing to help elders in need, providing services like companionship, cooking, give them rides, help with cleaning and gardening.
