Book Review: "No, No, Elizabeth" by Carmen Jimenez

By Jeanette Dempsey, Publisher October 3, 2017

As a parent, we want to do everything we can to make our kids happy. Take them to the park, schedule playdates with their friends, allow them to have sleepovers and host their next amazing birthday party. We do so much forĀ our kidsĀ because we love them. We also need to take care of ourselves our homes and work. That can be hard to do especially when you have little ones that expect to have 100% of your attention. Most young children only think of their wants and needs, which makes sense if you are a child (regardless of their age).

"No, No, Elizabeth!"Ā is very enlightening, easy to read book aboutĀ a young girl that doesn't understand why her familyĀ tells her "no" when she wants to do things. Elizabeth is toldĀ "no" when she wants to go outside, she is toldĀ "no" when she wants to jump on the bed, she is even told "no" when she wants to eatĀ the snacks that Grandma is preparing for Grandpa. Poor little Elizabeth, just can't seem to do anything right. After hearing "no" so many times, Elizabeth begins to feel that her family doesn't love her and begins to show openly display her anger.Ā Ā

Sweet little Elizabeth is upset until it is explained to her why sometimesĀ she needs to be toldĀ "no", but that doesn't mean her family doesn't love her. Her family comes together and tells her that they do in fact love her very much. "No, No, Elizabeth" is a great book that can be read to young children to help them understand that sometimes it's necessary for them to be told "no".Ā "No, No, Elizabeth!"Ā demonstrates how kids make their own assumptions about things when they are not allowed to do what they want. They don't consider the consequences of their actions so they may feel angry if they are constantly told "no".

This book is a wonderfully example of how parents can explain to their children that they sometimes have to say "no" in a loving and caring manner. The illustrations areĀ fantastic and help convey the story with bold, beautiful colorsĀ that attracts readers to it and makes you want to learn what the story is about. The story is a beautiful journey to understanding why sometimes mom, dad or even grandparents have to say no sometimes.Ā In addition to being a great children's book and resource for parents, "No, No, Elizabeth!" is also aĀ great tool to be used in counseling sessions by clinical staff. The author saw a need for a counseling tool and "No, No, Elizabeth!"Ā fills the gapĀ that encompasses parents needĀ as well as the counselor I really enjoyed reading it and would definitely recommend parents with early readers get a copy and clinical personnel should include this in their tool kit as it could be an invaluable asset.
