The season for entertaining is upon us, and it’s easy to get swept up in recreating party ideas from Pinterest. But if you have a limited budget, pause and refocus on what you’re really trying to accomplish.

Holiday celebrations are an opportunity to reconnect with friends and family. It’s less about how your home looks and more about the atmosphere you create. Some simple hacks can help you throw a great party without the financial hangover.

Make a budget. Start the season with a dedicated budget for expected expenses: holiday and hostess gifts, food and drink for entertaining, and decorations, gift wrap and accessories. Consider using cash to track spending and avoid credit card debt.

Simplify your party theme. Instead of hosting a formal dinner party, focus on the best parts: wine and small bites or dessert. Ask guests to contribute to your spread, whether with a favorite bottle or a family cookie recipe. Plenty of sampling will encourage mingling and conversation for a fun evening.

Create a glowing ambiance. Candlelight creates a cozy feel. Buy tealights and holders in bulk or at dollar stores, and arrange them around your space in clusters. For added interest, nestle them among natural items like gourds and branches in fall or pine cones and greenery in winter.

Use what you have. Take a thorough inventory of serving pieces and décor. Silver serving trays add a touch of elegance, or extra shimmer for those tealights. That snow globe collection? Group it together as a centerpiece, weaving through some ribbon or greenery.

Buy in bulk. Keep extra wine and sweets on hand for hostess gifts or guests. Many grocers offer price breaks for half or full cases of wine, and warehouse clubs package up prettily wrapped treats ready to give.
